As I remarked in my commentary on President Putin’s ‘butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth’ sweet-talking speech and responses in Q&A at the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club gathering, he went out of his way to allay fears that Russia will attack Europe except if they impose a blockade on Kaliningrad, and even then, not necessarily using nuclear weapons. No, Russia is open for business and good relations with everyone.
Well, not quite everyone. Russia is now beating the hell out of Ukraine. Latest news tells us the Russia has just bombed three bridges in Kiev across the Dnieper River. This is something that should have been done 3 years ago. Better late than never.
And Volodymyr Zelensky is on the front page of The Financial Times bleating that the Kremlin has instructed its military commanders that the ‘rules of war’ will no longer be observed and that they can destroy any and all civilian infrastructure as they see fit. Judging by the bridge bombings it is possible that Zelensky was telling the truth for once.
Meanwhile, somewhat bizarrely, the Kremlin is claiming that all but 6% of the terrotiry of the Donetsk oblast is now under its control. It will be interesting to see this new claim set out on maps on this evening’s news.
All of this confirms my prediction that the war will come to an end very soon, and on Russian terms.

Who in Ukraine is in a position to surrender? That is the question.
Interesting technical military advance.

There was also an article on a strategy for attacking those massive Soviet-era Dnieper Bridges, but I could not find it. Maybe that will happen.
