The overwhelming accent in Western media coverage of the hour-long Trump-Putin telephone conversation on 3 July was Trump’s alleged disappointment over the Russian leader’s insistence on pursuing the war with Ukraine until all of Russia’s objectives are realized. Putin said that the door was open to continuing peace negotiations with Kiev at any time but without compromise on Russia’s end goals.
